Ghost Sign on the Royal Mile

Ghost signs; there are many in Edinburgh, they tell us about businesses, shops and products that no longer exist.

You can see them on doorways, above windows and on gable ends.

These signs from the past were originally painted with oil-based paint.

The paint that’s lasted all this time probably has lead in it, which keeps it strongly attached to the surface of the masonry.
