James Craig and his plan for Edinburgh's New Town

James Craig – 31 October 1739 – 23 June 1795

James Craig was the Edinburgh architect who won the 1766 competition to plan the New Town of Edinburgh.

His layout used the topography of the site, and the grid-iron, uncluttered plan proposed was in stark contrast to the narrow streets and closes of the Old Town.
