Alexander James Adie (1775–1858)
Alexander James Adie (1775–1858) was one of Edinburgh’s most accomplished scientific instrument makers, earning an international reputation for the quality and precision of his optical and meteorological instruments during the late Georgian and early Victorian periods. Best remembered as the inventor of the sympiesometer, a revolutionary marine barometer, he also supplied instruments to some of the greatest scientists of the nineteenth century, including Charles Darwin, Sir David Brewster and Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker, and served as optician to King William IV and Queen Victoria.
Adie’s story is all the more remarkable because of his difficult beginnings. Born in Edinburgh on 7 November 1775, he never knew his father, John Adie, a printer and part-proprietor of the Edinburgh Evening Courant, who died before Alexander was born. His mother, Elizabeth Miller, later remarried but also died while Alexander was still young, leaving Alexander and his brother to be brought up by their maternal uncle, John Miller, one of Edinburgh’s leading mathematical instrument makers.
Unlike many of the scientists who later became his customers, Adie received little formal education and is believed to have left school at around age 12. Determined to improve himself, he attended evening classes in mathematics, algebra, chemistry and natural philosophy while learning his trade during the day. This combination of practical craftsmanship and self-education would become the foundation of his remarkable career.
In 1789, at just fourteen years of age, Adie was apprenticed to his uncle’s workshop in Parliament Close, just off Edinburgh’s Royal Mile. There he learned the art of producing precision mathematical, optical and philosophical instruments at a time when Edinburgh was one of Europe’s great centres of scientific thought. By 1803 he had become John Miller’s business partner in the firm of Miller & Adie, laying the foundations for a business that would become internationally respected.
Alexander James Adie – his greatest achievement
His greatest achievement came in 1818 with the invention of the sympiesometer. Unlike traditional mercury barometers, the sympiesometer used compressed gas and almond oil, making it lighter, more compact and far better suited to life aboard ship. At a time when Britain depended on maritime trade and exploration, the instrument quickly gained favour with both the Royal Navy and the merchant marine, becoming one of the most successful marine weather instruments of the nineteenth century.
Rather than simply manufacturing instruments from existing designs, Adie worked closely with many of the era’s leading scientists and engineers, including Sir David Brewster, Sir John Leslie, William Wallace and lighthouse engineer Robert Stevenson. These collaborations helped advance research in optics, meteorology, navigation and engineering, while reinforcing Edinburgh’s reputation as a centre of scientific innovation.
Long before inventing his famous barometer, Adie had developed a fascination with the weather. Beginning in 1795, he kept meticulous daily observations of temperature, atmospheric pressure, rainfall and wind, often using instruments that he had made himself. These detailed records continued for decades and later proved valuable to climatologists studying Edinburgh’s weather.
Adie’s daughter married astronomer Thomas Henderson, who later became the first Astronomer Royal for Scotland. Henderson later achieved international recognition for making the first reliable measurement of the distance to a star beyond the Solar System, placing the Adie family at the heart of one of the nineteenth century’s greatest scientific achievements.
Around 1840, Alexander’s son John Adie FRSE joined the family business, establishing Adie & Son at 58 Princes Street, Edinburgh.
From here, the company continued to manufacture precision scientific instruments for customers across Britain and beyond, helping to cement Edinburgh’s worldwide reputation for craftsmanship and scientific excellence.
Today, Alexander James Adie is remembered as far more than a skilled artisan. Rising from a difficult childhood and with little formal education, he became one of Britain’s leading scientific instrument makers through talent, perseverance and a lifelong commitment to learning. His sympiesometer transformed marine meteorology, while his optical instruments played a quiet but important role in the work of some of the greatest scientists of the Victorian age. Surviving Adie barometers, telescopes and microscopes remain highly prized by museums and collectors.
